Custard powder
This eggless Homemade Custard Powder is a breeze to make at home. It comes together in just 5 minutes using five simple ingredients from scratch.
Although it is easily available in grocery stores, making it home is preferable as it uses high-quality ingredients. It does not contain preservatives, and you can skip adding artificial color.
Traditional custard has added egg yolks, and people who don’t eat eggs might find the taste a bit eggy. But when made using this eggless powder, the custard tastes equally delicious, minus the eggy taste and smell.
The warm, creamy instant custard made using homemade powder mix is super delicious and has a fresh taste compared to the store-bought one. It is also gluten-free.
My recipe yields approximately 1 and ½ cups of powder to make custard for 10-12 people. You can easily half, double, or triple the recipe as needed.
Store the powder in an airtight, cool, dry container. It will keep for up to three months. To increase the shelf life, refrigerate it for up to 6 months.
You can use this homemade powder to make fruit custard, custard ice cream, or custard milkshake, or add it to sabudana kheer.
Custard Powder recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder or essence (optional)
A pinch of yellow food coloring (optional, for color)
Instructions:
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the powdered milk, cornstarch, sugar, salt, and vanilla powder (if using). Stir well until all the dry ingredients are evenly mixed.
Grind: If your powdered milk has any lumps, you can grind the mixture in a food processor or blender until it becomes a fine powder. This step ensures a smooth custard texture.
Store: Once the mixture is well blended, transfer it to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag for storage. Label the container with the date and contents for future reference.
Optional Coloring: If you want to add a yellow color to mimic traditional custard, you can mix in a pinch of yellow food coloring at this stage. Adjust the amount according to your preference, but be careful not to add too much, as it can affect the flavor.
Usage: To make custard, mix 2 tablespoons of custard powder with 2 tablespoons of sugar in a small saucepan. Gradually add 1 cup of milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
Cook: Place the saucepan over medium heat and continue stirring until the custard thickens and reaches your desired consistency. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
Serve: Once the custard is thick and creamy, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly before serving. You can enjoy it warm or chilled, depending on your preference.
Storage: Store any leftover custard powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It should last for several months if stored properly.
That’s it! Now you have homemade custard powder ready to use whenever you crave a delicious and creamy dessert. Enjoy
Tips
Color is added to give the custard a hint of yellow. You can skip it.
If you don’t have icing sugar, you can powder the regular sugar in a blender to make a fine powder. Since icing sugar has added cornstarch, add 2 tablespoon of extra cornstarch to the recipe.
While making the custard, it is important to dissolve the powder in a little milk to avoid lumps. If you still have lumps in your mixture, pass it through a fine-mesh strainer.
If the final custard has lumps, you can pass it through a fine-mesh strainer.
Add ½ cup of cocoa powder to the mix to make chocolate flavored powder.
